Student Spotlight

Board Game Expo

Students at HMS got to work on their creativity and innovation skills as a part of the board game expo! Getting together in groups, these Mustangs came up with unique and challenging board games. Games ranged from the elementary level where even our youngest GMSD students could participate, and other board games were created to challenge gamers with a focus on strategy.

This project required students to think outside of the box, work together in teams, and really dive into their creativity!

Program Spotlight

Houston Middle's Theater Program

Last school year, two teachers at Houston Middle recognized that there was an opportunity to bridge the gap between GMSD's elementary theater programs, and Houston High School's theater program, so they introduced HMS Theater. Student were able to learn about stage production and direction as well as performance.

In their first production, the Mustangs showcased their talents for singing as well as acting with Into the Wood Jr. Student from all across the school have come together to put on this production, and each student shared how exciting it was to make new friends and learn new skills as this program got started.

Sign Language at HMS

Storm Schoonover is the American Sign Language and seventh grade enrichment teacher at HMS. Ms. Schoonover was interested in teaching students ASL because it helps these Mustangs to embrace and understand inclusion, while also allowing students to experience a very kinesthetic style of learning.

In this semester class, students were able to learn the basics to then further build upon this skill, and they will be able to use the basic phrases they are learning in real-world scenarios.
