Last Friday, Houston Middle School welcomed more than 350 students into their new houses during an exciting and energetic House Sorting ceremony—the largest in the school’s history. The event, filled with school spirit, featured a dramatic new twist: smoke effects to reveal each student’s house assignment. As the smoke cleared, students discovered their new house—Lipizzan, Andalusian, Dartmoor, or Percheron—and the gym erupted in cheers.
For many students, the anticipation was high. During Mustang's Move (recess), a poll found that most students were hoping to be sorted into Lipizzan, but every house proudly welcomes its new members with excitement and loud cheers from the crowd. The school’s four-house system is designed to build community and friendly competition, and this year’s ceremony set the stage for a year full of teamwork, collaboration, and school pride.
“This year’s sorting ceremony was our biggest ever, and the excitement in the air was amazing,” said one Houston Middle staff member. “The students were thrilled, and we can’t wait to see how they will grow in their houses throughout the year.”
The house system at Houston Middle School has become a beloved tradition, uniting students through team-based activities and competitions. Throughout the year, students earn points for their houses through academic achievements, participation in events, and demonstrating good character.
With the sorting ceremony complete, the 2024-25 school year is off to a spirited start, and students are eager to compete, collaborate, and make lasting memories.
