Houston Middle School teacher Brett Emerson is finding creative ways to bring STEM careers into the classroom. This year, he launched a series of virtual guest speakers to connect students with professionals in fields ranging from robotics to aeronautics.

Emerson, who teaches robotics to sixth graders, engineering and design to seventh graders, and drones to eighth graders, carefully selects speakers to align with each grade level’s curriculum. He recently invited a civil engineer to speak to seventh graders and has a FedEx pilot lined up for his eighth-grade aeronautics unit.

“STEM is more than just classroom learning,” Emerson explained. “I want my students to see the real-world applications of what they’re studying and understand the range of career options available to them.”

Students have been enthusiastic about the virtual sessions. One memorable moment came when a guest shared a project redesigning downtown Detroit near Ford Field for the Detroit Lions, complete with before and after photos. Emerson said the students were excited and engaged, asking thoughtful questions throughout the session.

Emerson is also leveraging his personal and professional networks to bring in speakers. “I put it out on my personal social media to find friends and colleagues in STEM careers,” he said. “I want students to connect with people they can relate to and see what’s possible in the field.”

Originally from Michigan, Emerson taught 13 years at Grahamwood Elementary before joining GMSD. He has been impressed by the district and Houston Middle in particular. “GMSD as a whole is amazing, and HMS is beyond amazing. I love it here,” he said.

Looking ahead, Emerson has exciting plans for his students, including using drones at school events, with eighth graders acting as the pilots. “I want them to experience hands-on learning and leadership in STEM,” he said.

With his innovative approach and commitment to connecting students with real-world STEM experiences, Emerson is helping Houston Middle students see the possibilities for their future careers while making learning both engaging and meaningful.
