HMS Launches New Photography Class for Sixth Graders

Students at HMS are learning to see the world through a new lens—literally. This year, the Mustangs introduced a brand-new photography class for sixth graders, taught by Ms. Jordan Bell, that combines creativity, technology, and hands-on experience.

Ms. Bell, who discovered her own passion for photography in high school through yearbook, editing, and graphic design, wanted to share that same spark with her students. “The goal for this class is just to get them interested in photography by teaching basic skills and giving them something entirely new to explore,” she explained. With 26 students enrolled, the course offers a unique chance to learn practical skills that can translate into high school opportunities, future internships, or simply better personal photos.

Students say the class has already been a hit. Sixth grader Avery May explained that she joined to “get better at taking photos,” since she already enjoys snapping pictures with friends. For classmate Paisley Mendoza, it was about exploring a new hobby with real cameras. Neither had used a DSLR before, but both said learning on digital cameras has been exciting.

When asked what they’re most looking forward to, the answer came quickly: “Photo styling,” both Avery and Paisley said, adding that they’re eager to practice portrait photography next. From framing a subject’s face to capturing the right balance in a shot, they’re picking up techniques that will help them with both classroom projects and personal memories.

For Ms. Bell, the highlight is giving her students a chance to dive into something fresh and creative. “They get hands-on experience and learn skills that could carry them into high school, careers, or just everyday life,” she said.

With projects like sauce-making in culinary arts and robotics in STEM already engaging HMS students, photography now joins the lineup of innovative electives shaping young Mustangs. And if Avery and Paisley’s enthusiasm is any sign, the future looks picture-perfect. We are proud to see these Mustangs working towards new skills each and every day.
