Houston Middle School Girls Soccer Captures State Championship Title!

The Houston Middle School girls soccer team capped off an extraordinary season with a dominant 6–0 victory over Athens City Middle School, claiming the TMSSAA State Championship title. The win marked the culmination of a perfect postseason run in which the Mustangs also captured District, Regional, and Sectional Championships on their road to state.
Coach Wendy Percoski shared that what made this championship especially remarkable was the unity and resilience of the entire team. “It’s hard to pinpoint any one player with this team because, as cliché as it sounds, this truly was an entire team effort,” she said

Anchored by a steadfast defense led by Mallory Weed and Eryn Beaver, HMS held off multiple scoring threats from Athens City in the first half. The teams went into halftime locked at 0–0, largely due to strong goalkeeping from Athens City. But just five minutes into the second half, the Mustangs broke through when Piper Olswing sent a perfectly timed pass to Reese Kelley, who calmly placed the ball past the keeper to open the scoring.

From there, the momentum never stopped. Korbyn Greene added the second goal off a cross from Olswing, followed by four more goals from Kelley, Olswing, and Elise Fang as the Mustangs’ offense refused to let up.

Coach Percoski credited her players’ mental toughness, especially after facing their first true challenge in the semifinals. “It was a testament to their ability to stay focused knowing they were facing tough competition,” she said.

The championship win also represents the strength and depth of Houston’s soccer program across all levels. “I see a very talented group of eighth graders moving to our high school team to further strengthen the program, and our returners will continue to build on this success,” Percoski added.

Reflecting on the season, she emphasized the unique camaraderie that defines HMS soccer. “It’s special for girls spread across three grades and multiple club teams to come together and show such unity and strength,” she said. “My goal has always been for them to have fun playing the sport they love while representing their school and building friendships they might not have otherwise.”

With 42 players across JV and varsity rosters, the HMS Mustangs not only finished as champions, but they also further strengthened a legacy of teamwork and athletic determination. We are so proud of these student athletes, and we can’t wait to see what our 8th grade Mustangs accomplish next year at HHS.
